come with me on broadway where tonight i'm seeing once upon a mattress unfortunately i missed seeing the new york city center on course production of the mary rogers classic starring sutton foster and michael urie earlier this year so i was ecstatic when i found out it was going to be transferring to broadway and i knew i couldn't make the same mistake again now the only prior knowledge i have of once upon a mattress is that it was the show that put carol burnett on the map and it's a musical adaptation of the fairy tale the princess and the pea i had also heard two songs from the show beforehand shy and happily ever after i had also heard amazing things about this production too, which honestly isn't that surprising considering New York City Center knocks it out of the park every time. And in the end, I am so glad I finally got to see it on Broadway because this production is fantastic. First off, this cast is stacked with musical comedy royalty. I never denied it for a single second, but Sutton Foster, who I believe is one of the greatest musical theater comedians of our generation, is the perfect Winifred. Her physical comedy is unmatched, and at times she pays tribute to the OG, Carol Brown. Burnett. Michael Urie is delightful as Dauntless. Nikki Renee Daniels and Will Chase are perfect as Larkin and Harry. Daniel Breaker, who's back on Broadway for the first time since Shrek, is unreal as the jester. And of course, Anna Gasteyer as the queen. Enough said. But I think where the show really shines is in its new book by Amy Sherman Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls and the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Now the show's only running until November 30th, so if you want to pass this princess test, get your tickets right now.
