Did you know that the first smallpox hospital in the country was in New York City? It was built in 1856 and then converted into a nursing school. It closed and was abandoned in the 1950s. The floors, stairwells, and windows were stripped and what remains today are these Gothic ruins located on Roosevelt Island.
