Okay, you're never going to believe this, but beneath these old skylights is actually an entire city beneath Seattle. Why does Seattle even have an underground city? Well, it's actually due to the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, which devastated the city. And when it came to rebuilding, the city decided to raise the street level to avoid potential flooding. The new streets were built 12 feet higher than the original level. Seattleites used to have to climb ladders to go between street level and building entrances. And as you can see, many of the buildings left underground were abandoned and some became speakeasies and shelters for the homeless. There was even a time where 2,000 people lived underground. The unique underground history of Seattle is something not to miss.
