The family on this monument wasn't simply imagined. Sculptor Franco Alessandrini studied real photographs of immigrants arriving in New Orleans. Alessandrini was an Italian immigrant himself and he traveled to Carrara, Italy to choose the marble. Even the stone crossed an ocean before finding its place beside the Mississippi.
