Most people who stop at the Lalaurie Mansion assume that they're looking at the exact same house from 1834. They're not. After the fire that exposed the horrific treatment of enslaved people, the building was badly damaged. What stands here today was rebuilt afterward, and even the third floor was added later. So this address has carried the Lalaurie name for nearly two centuries. But the building itself has changed around that history. And when you're standing here on Royal Street at night, that's the part I keep thinking about. The story stayed even when the house didn't.
