Joan of Arc has a pretty unexpected role in New Orleans. She helps kick off Mardi Gras season. Every January 6th, Twelfth Night, the Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc holds a medieval style walking parade through the French Quarter in her honor. It's Joan's traditional birthday, but in New Orleans, that date means something else too. Carnival has begun. So while Mardi Gras itself is still weeks away, Joan of Arc is right there at the start of the season.
