Storyville had a secret hiding in plain sight. The version people came to see was partly an advertisement. Along Basin Street, extravagant brothels sold an image of luxury while Storyville's blue books advertised women, champagne, cigars, and even the houses themselves. The museum even recreates Jasmine, a perfume its exhibit associates with Storyville's women. But many women worked in far less glamorous houses, in tiny rooms called cribs. And here's the wild part. Men arriving near Basin Street could buy a blue book and be handed the fantasy before they'd even entered Storyville.
